South Otago Forest and Bird chairman Roy Johnstone and committee member Jim Young started clearing the path for a new "nature link'' track at the Lenz Reserve near Tautuku last week.
There are already three tracks in the reserve but the new one will help link the reserve nature walk with the historic Traill tractor site.
The reserve is the largest owned by Forest and Bird in New Zealand.
Mr Young said there was a lot of public interest in the historic site, but it had become overgrown since logging ceased. It was hoped to open it up to the public by summer.
Mr Johnstone said the new track was only in the early stages of development. Volunteer workers would clear the pathway and a wooden boardwalk would be built to cover the swampland.
The path would follow one of the old tramways where logs were dragged along the ground, Mr Johnstone said.
Because of the historic value, it was a neat track, he said.
The current network of tracks in the area was intended to be for those staying at Tautuku Lodge, but the new track would be for public use.
