Pipers, drummers enjoy success at first nationals

The Balclutha Pipe Band, boasting several younger members at their first national championships, returned home with silverware and confidence it can compete with the country's best bands.

Members and supporters travelled to Christchurch for the event this month, winning the grade four plate competition and a fourth placing out of 23 bands in the street march competition.

The band was led by pipe major Alex McLaughlan and drum sergeant Hayden McElrea.

The band was sixth in its grade four pool for the set competition and won the grade's plate competition for its efforts in the medley section.

Pipe corporal Rachael Wright said the band was thrilled with its results, especially as it has a large number of younger pipers and drummers.

"For a majority of band members, this was the first time they had attended national championships," she said.
