A recidivist drink-driver was apprehended by police near Tapanui on Sunday night after allegedly driving intoxicated to the pub on a quad bike.
Hours earlier, the man and his wife had been drinking at a local pub, ''but were given a ride home due to having too much to drink and they couldn't drive home'', Sergeant Clint Wright, of Gore, said.
''However, they decided they needed a car the next day, so they got on the quad bike to go get the car.''
The 42-year-old man and his wife were stopped on the Tapanui-Raes Junction highway about 10.20pm.
The man recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 896mcg, more than double the legal limit of 400mcg, Sgt Wright said.
His licence was also suspended for 28 days.
It was the sixth time the man had been charged with a drink-driving offence and ''he just thought he was immune from drink driving''.
Sgt Wright praised the members of the public who contacted police about the driving behaviour.
The man is expected to appear in the Gore District Court on July 23.
