Rain not dampening spirits for cavalcade's riders

Rain fell on riders, walkers and support crews in this year's Otago Cavalcade this week, but organisers say the forecast will lift spirits as they approach their shared destination.

All trails have been drenched by rain at various stages but chief organiser, Roberta Laraman, yesterday said trail bosses had reported good morale as forecasts improved.

Trails were well into the second half of their journeys from various points throughout Otago and Southland and would prepare to parade into the township of Waikaka at noon on Saturday.

There had been reports of some horses being injured but nothing serious, she said.

One rider, crossing a swollen section of the Mataura River, was "dunked" but unhurt.

"As the weather forecast improves, so too do the spirits of everyone involved," Mrs Laraman said.

Trail bosses were telling her they remained on schedule.
