Growing demand for ambulance services in and around Milton has prompted the Order of St John to appoint its first paid staff member in the area.

Malcolm Flett has started as Milton team leader for the organisation.

Coastal Otago district operations manager David Jasperse was delighted Mr Flett's appointment had been approved.

‘‘The Milton area is experiencing growing demands on ambulance services and while we have a strong team of 16 very dedicated and committed volunteers, the appointment of Malcolm will lessen the pressure of the workload.''

Extra Ministry of Health funding has secured the paid position so St John can better meet the needs of the community.

Developments such as the Otago Corrections Facility and a growing population as a result has meant ambulance staff have been called on more frequently in recent months.

‘‘Malcolm brings a great deal of experience to this position and I have full confidence in his ability to meet the challenges of the position and provide the community with the service it expects,'' Mr Jasperse said.
