Three people were injured, one seriously, in a  collision between two utes in the Manuka Gorge yesterday.

Police were called about 8.50am to State Highway 8 about halfway between Milton and Lawrence, near Pighunters Rd, a spokeswoman said. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said it sent one ambulance and two Otago Regional Rescue helicopters.

Ambulance officers attended to a 74-year-old man with serious injuries at the scene, and two men in their 30s with moderate to serious injuries. All three were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital. Local vets also removed an injured dog from the scene about 15km south of Waitahuna.

Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley said incidents in the heavily shaded gorge were not uncommon.

"We get quite a few calls for service up here. Although frosty road conditions don’t appear to have been a factor in this incident, it’s a timely reminder as we come into winter to be mindful of shady roads where ice may be present, and take extra care when driving."

The serious crash unit was investigating.
