Sirens could be heard wailing around Balclutha last night, but there was no fire or emergency to worry about.

The Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade, with the support of a group of motorcyclists, drove around the streets of Balclutha sounding their sirens in the annual ''Toot for Tucker'' charity food grab.

Clutha District Council community support and development adviser Jean Proctor said a flier drop last week informed residents of the event.

The fire brigade and volunteer runners went from door to door collecting non-perishable foods to go to the local foodbank. She was happy with this year's donations.

The event was organised and promoted with help from the council, and was supported by the fire brigade and the Salvation Army.

The Big River Bikers and the Balclutha St John also helped with the collection.

The Salvation Army co-ordinated the collection and mission director Kaye Bell had encouraged riders and drivers to make as much noise as possible when collecting food.

''You can use whatever you want to create lots of noise and lots of excitement.''

People were expecting the drive, she said.

The volunteers involved with collecting food were split into three groups to target North Balclutha, central Balclutha and Rosebank.
