Southern emergency services have had a horror start to the new year, with two people killed in crashes this morning.

Shortly after 10am this morning Queenstown police were called to a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist at the 'Devils Staircase' near Queenstown.

Police are still at the scene.

At around the same time South Otago emergency services were called to a fatal crash on the same remote and narrow Catlins road that was the scene of another serious crash just two days earlier.

Details on today's incident are still sketchy but police have confirmed to the Otago Daily Times a South Otago person, the sole occupant of a car travelling on Cannibal Bay Road, died at the scene.

An overturned car was found down the bottom of a steep bank about 2km from the popular Cannibal Bay beach.

It is not known what time the crash happened but it is understood the car may have been there since early morning. Emergency services were
alerted about 10am.

A serious crash unit investigator travelled from Alexandra to attend the scene.

The crash happened on a narrow and windy stretch of gravel road about 4km from the scene of a crash on Tuesday when 12 elderly occupants were shocked but otherwise unhurt when the minivan they were in left the road and rolled 3m down a bank.

Steep terrain at the scene of this morning's crash made it difficult for emergency services to access the scene and a farmer was due to use a tractor to overturn the vehicle before bringing it back up to the road.

The road, which is a popular tourist route between Kaka Point and Owaka, was closed while police and fire crews worked at the scene.
