Upgrade details

improvements to Lawrence's main street are in the pipeline as the town counts down to its 150th anniversary, which in less than two years.

More details on the planned upgrades were released to this week's Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board and show increased main-street car-parking, improvements to the entrance at Gabriels Gully and possibly relocating street power wires underground are all being considered.

A report tabled at the meeting shows key features of the project include creating a boardwalk across a bridge at Hospital Creek.

Foodstuffs South Island Ltd, which owns the land next to the Lawrence supermarket, would be the main contributor to an expanded car park there.

Other plans include upgrading the entrance to Gabriels Gully, where many of the 2011 celebrations will be staged, and possibly relocating some street wires underground in the main business area of town.

Meanwhile, the Clutha District Council has begun advertising for a person to help co-ordinate the 2011 celebrations.

Applications for the part-time job close on June 12.
