Violence of concern

A  rise in domestic violence in Clinton is of concern,  police say.

In the latest incident, a 39-year-old Clinton man was arrested on intimidation charges at the weekend, after allegedly threatening to stab another person after a fight.

The man was released on bail and is due to appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday.

Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Alastair Dickie, of Balclutha, said there had been a number of similar events in Clinton in the past few months.

Domestic violence incidents in the town had increased and were "keeping the Clinton constable busy".

Domestic incidents often happened unseen and were not being reported early enough for police to intervene, he said.

"It’s difficult to police because it’s behind closed doors a lot of the time until it blows up."

Many disputes related to income or financial issues and alcohol.

Police and organisations had ways of intervening early to prevent situations from escalating but needed to know it was going on.It was important for neighbours to report anything suspicious to police so harm-reduction strategies could be put into effect.

"If they hear yelling, screaming or banging, it needs to be checked."

Police were still investigating an incident reported earlier in the year in which a man allegedly pulled a gun and threatened to kill the occupants of a house in Clinton.
