A South Otago sex scandal, which erupted when a conwoman posing as a man was exposed, will be re-enacted for all to see when the 100th anniversary of the furore is staged near Kaka Point next year.
Amy Bock became infamous throughout New Zealand for disguising herself as a man, Percy Redwood, a wealthy sheep farmer.
Her exploits were only exposed the night of her wedding to a local woman, Agnes Ottaway, and she was arrested.
Nearly a century on from that drama, another is planned, this time re-enacting that wedding day, complete with a marquee at the Willsher Bay site.
Organisers would like guests to dress in period costume and relive the day and the ensuing scandal.
South Otago Museum curator Gary Ross, who is helping pull the big day together, said an original script was being developed and actors were being sourced to realistically re-create what, for the time, was one of the most sensational stories of its kind.
An all-out effort to reproduce the events leading up to the infamous wedding and subsequent arrest has begun.
Apart from the main event at Willsher Bay domain on April 11 next year, a multi-media exhibition based on the full Amy Bock story will be staged.
There is even talk the South Otago Theatrical Society could stage a brief Amy Bock season to re-create the event for those unable to attend the wedding day.
The museum already boasts several Amy Bock exhibits, including the suit she wore on the big day, a wedding invitation she wrote and original newspaper clippings which detailed the event and its aftermath.
A special exhibition marking the woman behind the man is also planned.
Just like the 1909 wedding, only 200 tickets will be made available for next April's event.
Tickets will go on sale at the museum next month.
