Woman injured as quad bike rolls

A teenage woman has back injuries after a quad bike rolled in South Otago.

A St John ambulance was called to Waipahi Station Rd, Wairuna, about 6.20pm on Christmas Eve, following reports a quad bike had rolled down a bank.

The Otago Regional Rescue helicopter was also called to the scene.

A 19-year-old was flown to Dunedin Hospital with moderate back injuries, a St John spokesman said.

No further details were available.

Earlier this month, the Otago Daily Times published details of a report by the Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee, which said 33 children were killed in off-road vehicle accidents between 2002 and 2012.

Nearly half were using the vehicles recreationally.

Otago had the highest number of deaths of children and young people operating motorcycles, quads and motorised agricultural vehicles in off-road settings.

Nine people up to the age of 24 died in Otago during the reporting period.
