Working in NZ `chance of lifetime' for UK officers

Clutha's thin blue line now has an even more distinctively British flavour to it, with three police officers from the United Kingdom starting work on the beat this week.

Married couple Constables Daniel and Lesley Love began work in Balclutha yesterday, while Const Chris Wakelin starts tomorrow.

The Loves have both been in the police force for nearly 15 years and saw the opportunity to live and work in New Zealand as the chance of a lifetime.

Serious crime was growing in the United Kingdom and this was putting pressure on police resources.

Working in a country like New Zealand provided great opportunities they might not otherwise have experienced, Mr Love said.

He had been on the beat since yesterday morning, while his wife joined him and the rest of the on-duty officers at 3pm.

Sergeant Martin Bull said the Clutha police staff totalled 18, and now six of those had British origins.
