Police have swarmed an Invercargill park and are inspecting a car which crashed into a fence near a playground.

About ten officers were at Elizabeth Park at 10.30am and had cordoned off the scene by about 10.45am.

A police spokeswoman said it was called to reports of a car swerving in the area of John St in Heidelberg, Invercargill.

The car failed to stop when indicated by police, but was stopped at a police cordon made up of a patrol car.

The car crashed through a fence, with its hood up, she said.

The car impounded and the driver was arrested for failing to stop.

A 32-year-old local man will appear in court on driving charges at a later date, she said.
