Community spirit is ensuring unwanted cats and kittens at Gore's SPCA have a warm and cosy blanket to cuddle into on cold nights.

Gore Spinners and Weavers club members - about 30 women - are spreading the love to small felines who are reliant on people.

Gore Spinners and Weavers president Biddy Kerr said the group was all about giving something to the community and engaging the community in needlework skills.

"The animals can't help themselves," Mrs Kerr said.

The challenge of making, knitting or sewing a cuddly blanket for kittens and cats was put to club members a month ago.

Last Tuesday, more than 30 blankets were boxed up, and Gore SPCA manager Tanya Burke picked them up and delivered them back to the shelter.

Mrs Burke said the blankets would be well used and would make for better comfort for the cats who were used to old sheets and towels.

"We have a lot of cats come in with injuries, illnesses, and they really require something to keep the heat.

So, these lovely ladies decided they would knit some blankets," Mrs Burke said.

The blankets have been cleverly made from old jerseys, or knitted and sewn from scratch, while some blankets have pictures of kittens and cats stitched into them.

"With kitten season approaching, we do need these blankets to keep them warm," she said.

While the community was very supportive of the shelter with incredible donations and acts of kindness, Mrs Burke said the majority of food for the animals was brought in by volunteers.

"Sometimes it takes us to ask for help and people are usually quite supportive of us," Mrs Burke said.

This Monday, SPCAs throughout New Zealand have a Cup Cake Day planned to raise funds for shelters.
