Eight more people have thrown their names in the hat for the Invercargill City Council by-election.

There are now 12 candidates vying for the spot left by Nigel Skelt who resigned from council last month.

Lisa Tou-McNaughton, David Pottinger, David Meades, Sebastien Fabre, Ian Reeves, Terry King, Rob Te Maiharoa and Steve Broad have joined David Hicks, Carl Heenan, Graham Lewis and Andrea Murrell in the race.

Mr Broad is one of the presenters of Southland’s Breakfast Club with Joe & Steve at More FM and was a contestant on New Zealand’s The X Factor in 2015.

He said it would be a privilege to serve the city he loved.

Ms Tou-McNaughton said it was an exciting opportunity.

"I love Invercargill and its people.

"I am excited by the developments happening within our city."

Mr Pottinger believed his experience as a manager and facilitator would be a good addition to the council table.

"It’s what I do in my job and what I do when I’m doing other things outside my community — I get people to work together."

Mr Meades believed his experience as a builder could help fix issues, including the housing crisis.

Mr Reeves decided to put his name forward after many people suggested he should.

"I’ve been in the community for a long time and done a lot of things in the community.

"And I’ve had a lot of rewards from actually living in the city so I’ve been very lucky.

"So I think it’s an opportunity for me to use the skills and the knowledge that I’ve got to give something back to the communities that [have] been so good to me."

Mr Fabre, Mr King and Mr Te Maiharoa were approached for comment but had not replied by deadline.

Nominations close today at noon, and voting opens on July 13.
