Farmer who sparked manhunt remanded in custody

A man who was the subject of a helicopter search and police armed offenders squad callout in Te Anau this week has been remanded in custody until his next appearance.

David John Wilson (51), a farmer from Te Anau, appeared before Judge Bernadette Farnan in the Invercargill District Court yesterday on two charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, assault of a police officer, escaping police custody and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, all at Te Anau on April 15.

Wilson was denied bail yesterday as the address he was to be bailed to was deemed inappropriate. He was remanded in custody without plea until 19 May 2020.

Judge Farnan suppressed further details of the bail application.

Manual Chae Junior Haami (30), of Invercargill, appeared on charges of breach of Ministry of Health regulations, failing to stop, dangerous driving and driving while forbidden, all at Invercargill on April 16. He was remanded in custody without plea to appear on April 21.

Hamirra Whetu Kingi (26), of Invercargill was remanded on bail without plea until May 26, when he appeared on charges of using a mug as a weapon and intentional damage of a motor vehicle, both at Invercargill on April 16.
