The NZ Transport Agency advised that the Woodlands-Invercargill Highway was closed between Racecourse Rd and Mill St South.
In an update around 10.40am the NZTA said the highway was now open.
A water tanker was sent to help fight the blaze.
The extent of the blaze was not known, but police said it was believed no-one had been injured.
