Man in court after police officer, dog hit by car

A 68-year-old Invercargill man will appear in Invercargill District Court on Tuesday on a range of driving charges after allegedly hitting a police officer and police dog.

A police spokeswoman said police received reports of "erratic driving'' by a motorist on the Bluff Highway on Friday night.

Police attempted to stop the driver just before midnight and he fled.

The car was "spiked'' but continued travelling for a short time, she said.

A police officer and police dog were hit as the car came to a stop on Dee St.

The police officer sustained bruising to a leg, she said.

The dog was not seriously injured, she said.
