An injured person was trapped in their car for a time this afternoon after the vehicle went off a Southland highway and crashed into a power pole, bringing lines down.

A police spokeswoman said the car went off State Highway 6 north of Winton and lines were down. A person had sustained moderate injuries and was trapped for a time before being freed.

The road is down to one lane south of Benmore Otapiri Rd, under stop/go traffic management.

Emergency services had been on site for "a couple of minutes" after being called to the scene about 12.45pm.

An ambulance was in attendance, he said.

More to come.
