A person was seriously injured when two cars crashed on State Highway 6 near Winton, in Southland, today.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of State Highway 6 and State Highway 96 at 12:45pm, a police spokeswoman said.
The highway was closed and diversions in place for a time as emergency services tried to free the driver of one of the vehicles, who was trapped for a time.
One person was taken to Southland Hospital in a serious condition, a St John spokeswoman said.
