A 20-year-old-man has been charged with murder following the death of another man in Invercargill.

Police said the 19-year-old died following a serious assault that happened in the area near ILT Stadium Southland about 11pm yesterday.

The accused appeared in the Invercargill District Court today. He was remanded in custody and granted name suppression.

Police said they were speaking with a number of other people in relation to the incident.

The examination of two scenes - the stadium and a house - are continuing and involve specialist staff from ESR.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification of the dead man would be made on Friday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey said police were grateful for the help received from the community.

However, they would still like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the stadium about 11pm on Wednesday or who had information that could be relevant to the investigation.
