Southland death one of two on South Island roads

One person has been killed in a crash near Athol, in Southland, one of two fatal crashes in the South Island yesterday.

In an earlier crash, a person died in a crash near Lincoln, in Canterbury.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 near Athol, about 5pm. 

One person died and four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In Canterbury, two cars collided at the intersection of Ellesmere and Tancreds Rds about 4.30pm.

Police said one person died and two others were injured.
