Stage set for sale of theatrical items

Theatrical memorabilia bargain hunters will have their hands full this weekend when several thousand items go on sale in Invercargill.

The Civic Theatre will be promoting its first Stage Sale.

Invercargill City Council venues manager Richard McWha said items up for grabs were those normally found on, above or backstage, such as theatrical lighting and sound equipment, props, office furniture, costumes, fabric and vintage clothing.

"Just about anything you can relate to theatre or theatrical performance, we’ve got here.

"We have no idea of how much is here — there is literally thousands and thousands of sets, of costumes, bits and pieces."

Many items would have no set price or would have an "reasonable" cost becausethe main aim of the sale was to clear out the items.

"It [the event] is not [about] making money or anything like that.

"We wanted to divert waste from landfill and we would also like to give back and encourage the arts."

The most important thing about the sale was that items "go to a new home [and get] used for creativity and excitement".

Other theatrical groups from Southland have also been invited to be involved in the sale, including Invercargill Musical Theatre, BDL Productions and Andrea Hows Artistry.

"[There will be] something for everyone to discover, rummage through and found some treasures."

The sale will take place tomorrow from 9am-3pm at the Civic Theatre.
