Police have named the two young people who died in a collision between two vehicles in Southland on Friday.

Driver Shanae Michelle Bruce (18) and passenger Jaykob Yaxley (14) were in a Honda hatchback involved in the crash on State Highway 98, near the intersection with Rakahoupa-Hedgehope Rd, just north of Invercargill.

Two other people were critically injured and taken to Southland Hospital.

Police said at the time it was unclear if one vehicle had crossed the centre-line or if one had driven through the  intersection, which is controlled by a give-way sign.

Today, police said the cause of the crash was still under investigation.

“This is a tragic event involving two young people, especially so close to Christmas,” Southland Area Commander, Inspector Joel Lamb said.

“While the cause of the crash is still to be determined, we are asking all drivers please to pause and carefully consider decisions made behind the wheel.''

''Just one mistake can change the lives of families forever.

“No-one wants to see a repeat of this type of tragedy.''
