Vehicle collides with train in Invercargill

A vehicle has collided with a train in Invercargill this morning.

A police spokeswoman said police were called to the scene at the intersection between West Plains Rd and the train crossing in Waikiwi about 10.15am.

She said no injuries had been reported "at this stage'' and an ambulance was sent to the scene.

The train had stopped just a few metres past the crossing.

An area of West Plains Rd had been blocked off.

The mangled car was towed away at 10.45am.

A nearby resident said she heard a loud bang, but didn’t head out to see what caused it.

“Next thing I know there were all these fire trucks and police."

She said it had been a long time since there was an accident at that train crossing.
