Women in Southland will get an opportunity to speak about issues concerning equality today in the first Southland women's hui.

The event is being organised by the group Kick in the Door (Kind) Women to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in New Zealand.

Kind has already held events in Southland this year in celebration of the anniversary and hui organiser Bec Amundsen said she hoped for another successful event.

"The hui is about bringing together as many women as we possibly could, to just spend the day having conversations about the issues around equality and inequality and what things we can do to support each other.''

Hui participants will write down issues of concern to them. Then event organisers will use those to plan discussion groups for the rest of the day.

Funds for the hui were raised during last month's talk by former prime minister Helen Clarke in Invercargill.

The hui begins at 9am at the Omaui YMCA Camp. More information is available via the Kind Women Facebook page.
