Wanaka's popular annual Labour Weekend art exhibition went ahead from Friday to yesterday, drawing hundreds of visitors to the Lake Wanaka Centre.
As part of the show, Central Otago artists Kate Costello, Kym Beaton, Robin Brisker, Jenny Hill, Kate Boswell and Julia Sternkopf demonstrated their techniques to the public.
Wanaka portraiture artist Kate Costello said she still worked in hospitality "so events like this are fantastic to get my name out there".
She would like to be painting full time in a couple of years.
The portrait she was painting on Saturday was based on her sister and her favourite toy.
Costello drew inspiration from people she knew and happy memories growing up.
Lake Hawea painter Sternkopf was born in Germany.
Living among mountains inspired her and she wanted to paint them for the rest of her life, she said.
Central Otago collage artist Hill was demonstrating the use of a heatgun on beeswax and resin.
"I use this as one of [the] mediums to layer my photos and papers into the wax," she said.
Albert Town artist Brisker was using watercolours, buttons, and old music to create collages. He also turned his blotter into an artwork.
Former Auckland resident Boswell has been painting landscapes in watercolours since arriving in Wanaka about 18 months ago.
Wanaka mixed media artist Beaton teaches art locally and around the South Island, and has been a member of the local arts society for 11 years.
"I’ve been doing art works recently of seaside and water images, harking back to my Australian heritage," she said.
Amy Bixby is a contemporary jewellery artist and makes a range of wearable artworks in her Albert Town workshop.
There were 305 entries, which Wanaka Art Society president Vicky Fulton said was about a 30% increase in entries from the previous exhibition.
