A person has been safely rescued from Mount Aspiring National Park this afternoon after suffering a knee injury while canyoning and being unable to walk.

A police spokesman said police and St John were informed of the incident at 12.40pm.

The injured person was part of a tour group and required a helicopter rescue to get them out of the park.

Police said a helicopter was arranged by the parties involved and the patient was taken to the Wanaka Medical Centre for attention.

Neither Wanaka Search and Rescue or Otago Rescue Helicopter were involved in the operation.
