Snow blindness delays climbers' descent

Two climbers have decided to spend tonight in a hut on Mount Aspiring after one of them was affected by snow blindness, police said.

The two New Zealand men had been descending the mountain but advised the Department of Conservation via a radio in the hut, at 2pm, that they were delaying their descent and would spend the night in the hut.

It was hoped that the snow blindness condition, caused by UV light, would clear sufficiently to allow the men to descend safely tomorrow, a police spokeswoman said.
