Sound system at party 'on the Richter scale'

A noisy party and a different ''interpretation'' of noise control led to one person being arrested in Wanaka on Saturday night.

Police were called to a house on Upton St about 10.30pm where about 70 people had gathered for a party.

Senior Senior Constable Darren Cranfield, of Wanaka, said the group had spent the day cycling around the town, many in costume, for an event dubbed the Tour de Fridge.

Police assisted the Queenstown Lakes District Council's noise control officer when some of the revellers tried to stop the stereo from being confiscated.

''A few of them caused an issue with their interpretation of the law.

''We all love to see people having a bit of fun but next year the end zone needs to be a better planned,'' Sen Const Cranfield said.

Most of the participants were well-behaved, but when they arrived at their final destination the group started to become noisy, Sen Const Cranfield said.

''I'd imagine their sound system was registering on the Richter scale going by the noise it was making and after a few hours the neighbours had had enough,'' he said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Tracy Haggart said one male was arrested for obstructing police and was given a pre-charge warning, while two other males were given verbal warnings.

Police were yet to talk to two other males for the same offence, Sen Sgt Haggart said.
