Unexpected power cut probed

Aurora Energy has apologised to customers affected by an unplanned power outage in Wanaka on Wednesday night.

Aurora Energy head of external relations Gary Johnson said the outage happened when one of the two high-voltage circuits supplying Wanaka was out of service for maintenance.

When power was restored to the circuit, it was ``unexpectedly tripped off'' in the Wanaka area for about 10 minutes.

The company was still investigating the reason.

Mr Johnson also wanted to remind Queenstown customers some areas would be affected by a planned power outage this Sunday. Power will be turned off to 685 customers in Queenstown from 9am to 3pm to allow line crews to replace four poles in Gorge Rd and Hamilton Rd as part of Aurora Energy's Fast Track pole programme.

``For the safety of the public and our workers, we need to turn power off to parts of Gorge Rd, Industrial Pl, Robins Rd, Hamilton Rd, Fryer St, Huff St, Bowen St and surrounding areas,'' he said.

``We understand power outages are an unwanted inconvenience and we thank Queenstown electricity customers for their patience as we carry out this necessary work.''
