Challenge Wanaka race director Bill Roxburgh was busy this week nputting the finishing touches to the race infrastructure  in Pembroke Park.

The Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival opened yesterday with the inaugural Otago Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships.

The Junior Challenge Wanaka for primary school children will be held today, starting at 9.30am.

Tomorrow,  about 170 athletes will tackle the full 226km Challenge triathlon, starting at 6.45am,  while 1200 more will compete in the 113km half triathlon, starting at 8.15am.

The field for the shorter event  will include Spanish Olympian and 10 times world champion Javier Gomez, and Wanaka’s Braden Currie.

Mr Roxburgh said  the infrastructure for the race was in place but he was  looking for more volunteers  to act as road marshalls.
