Southland Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Gary Iddenten said emergency services were called to the fire at a house on Lawrence St at about 5am on Friday.
Police were investigating and seeking more information from the public.
"Fortunately, nobody was injured in the fire, however it has since been deemed suspicious," Snr Sgt Iddenten said.
"To assist our enquiries, we’re seeking any information from members of the public who witnessed the fire or saw any suspicious activity around the Lawrence Street area in the early hours of Friday morning.
"We’re also appealing for any dashcam or CCTV footage from the area."
