A group of Southland artists will bring their interpretation of circles to life at an art exhibition to be held in the Deep South.

"Circles" will bring together works from 43 artists from C.S Art Studio, which explores challenging the status quo, coming out of comfort zones and finding release and progression.

C.S Art Studio co-founder Michelle Dawson said the art exhibition was about getting the artists to "think outside the square" and work within a circular space.

"We wanted to challenge people to get out of the way they usually did something, so instead of making artwork on squares or rectangles, we wanted to see how they would respond to having to do something that was circular," Ms Dawson said.

"There was the idea; circles being the circular nature of life, and how you learn things and then sometimes you have to relearn them.

"So you come back around and learn the same thing until you’ve learned it properly."

The exhibition will feature paintings and sculptures done by artists with disabilities and lived experience with mental health or trauma, from Invercargill, Gore and Clutha.

C.S Art Studio tutor Luke Dawson said the emotional growth he saw from the artists was just as important as the artworks they made.

"It might be more of an emotional experience for them, so they are here to grow in that sense, so maybe the art was not the most important thing for them," Mr Dawson said.

The exhibition will feature a diverse range of work, from a 13-year-old’s sci-fi-inspired painting to sculpture.

The "Circles" art exhibition is a culmination of a year of the group’s work.

The exhibition organisers thanked their sponsors and the community for their ongoing support of the collective.

C.S Art Studio’s group exhibition opening will be held on September 5, from 6pm at Whare Taupua art space, 34 Forth St, Invercargill.

"Circles" will run from September 5-26.
