H&J Smith staff will have a special focus at an event tailored to job seekers across the region.

The Southland Jobs Expo, promoted by Great South and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), will have hundreds of jobs on offer and more than 35 employers on site willing to recruit for positions in their companies as well answer any questions from job seekers.

Southland Youth Futures manager Renata Gill said when they were starting to organise the event, H&J Smith announced it would be closing in November.

They thought it was a great opportunity to help the staff there, she said.

"We wanted to support their staff and the community as well.

"So, we decided to promote a special session, after the event finishes, for them to get the most out of it."

Ms Gill said she was pleased with the number of companies which had come on board.

"The focus really is having those employers at the event and people to be able to talk to those employees about a range of different jobs within the businesses — which is quite exciting.

"Even if there’s not a specific job that they are wanting right now, it is still a good opportunity to network with that employer."

There would also be staff available who could help the people with their CVs, she said.

"They’ll be able to meet with people who [can] give them some tips and tricks and how they can put their best foot forward.

"They’ll be able to check that people have got all the stuff they need to include in it [CV] as well as point them in the right direction if they need further help."

The expo will be held on Tuesday at Hansen Hall at the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) from 2pm to 5pm.
