Hello, my name is Tayler Mutton. I’m a new reporter with the Southland Express.

I was born and raised in Christchurch, moving down to Invercargill around seven weeks ago for this job and have been loving it.

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a journalist so working here is a real dream come true.

Family wise, mum and her family are from Wingatui and Hyde, while my dad’s side come from West Auckland.

I grew up mainly in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton and attended St Thomas of Canterbury College from year 7 to 13.

In 2023 I started a Bachelor of Communications majoring in journalism at the University of Canterbury, which I finished in 2025. I officially graduated in April of this year and in May made the big move down south to start my career.

I’m an outspoken advocate for mental health — particularly eating disorders, as I have battled with anorexia for the past three years. I have turned my illness into a tool which helps me empathise and connect with people, and I’ve shared my story in hopes it can help anyone dealing with mental health struggles.

An article I wrote about my experience was submitted to, and won a journalism award at the end of last year.

I love reporting on all things local, and community stories are always my favourite.
