Just over half of Invercargill’s 9800 dogs have been registered, and the council is making a push to get everyone’s furry friends sorted and ready for the coming year.
Invercargill City Council group manager consenting and environment Jonathan Shaw said it had been encouraging that so many owners registered early.
"Registering your dog is one of the simplest ways to be a responsible pet owner, and we’re asking everyone who hasn’t done it yet to tick it off their to-do list before penalties apply."
All dogs over 3 months old are legally required to be registered and it also helps fund essential animal management services across Invercargill.
"Registration supports everything from responding to roaming dogs and dog attacks, to maintaining the Animal Care Facility, providing education programmes and helping reunite lost dogs with their owners."
He described the process of registration as "quick and easy", only taking a few minutes online.
"We know life gets busy . . . getting it done now means one less thing to think about."
