‘Powered through’ despite hard year

The Mataura Licensing Trust held its final meeting for the 2023 financial year last week.

MLT board president Mark Paterson said the board had done a good job during the year.

"It’s been a difficult year but certainly we should be proud that we powered through," Mr Paterson said.

Three new funding applications were granted at the meeting.

New Zealand and Gore bowler Sheldon Bagrie-Howley had a $5000 sponsorship extended.

Board member Craig Marshall said he would be happy to continue to sponsor him.

"Every piece you read about him he thanks the MLT, he’s very good at making sure we get mentioned," Mr Marshall said.

The MLT NZ Gold Guitar Awards were given $13,070 to contribute towards the MLT Music Roundup, MLT NZ Gold Guitar Awards senior overall winner prize, trophy and travel to Tamworth costs.

Mataura Licensing Trust Board president Horace McAuley said the Gold Guitar contribution had been well signalled.

"We knew this was coming and we agreed to it."

Six Eastern Southland rugby players from the Southland Boys’ First XV rugby team were given $150 each to contribute to costs associated with a trip to the Sanix World Youth Rugby Tournament in Fukuoka, Japan.

The six rugby players were Elliot Wilson, Jimmy Taylor, Noah Sutton, Jake Evans, Crenshaw Conroy and Jack Brock.

Board member Todd Lyders said the group fitted into the licensing trust’s boundary.

"They’re from around here but they go to [Southland Boys’ High School] because they are trying to further their rugby," Mr Lyders said.

At the meeting four funding applications were declined.

The four applications that were declined were for Swimming Southland, Aaron Horrell Timor Veterans Documentary, Momentum Charitable Trust and Desi Mercer.
