It was a battle of the Gore women’s rugby teams last Saturday, with Albion on top as it hoped to go one better than last year.

Pioneer and Albion premier women’s sides met in a match at Newman Park on Saturday, Albion winning 44-7.

After the game, Albion coach Murray Kennedy said the game between the two teams was "always a grudge match".

Albion kept a comfortable lead throughout the game, but team captain Amy McClure said she was impressed by the opposing team.

"The score, I don’t think reflects that game," she said.

"I think Pioneer really kept in there."

Pioneer did indeed put up a fight, especially in the second half, but McClure said it was her team’s speed that cemented the win.

"We played quite a fast game," she said.

"We just ran around them in a few stages there and were able to capitalise."

Albion manager Kevin Holland said the team was in second place of the competition and hoping to win the grade this year.

He also thought Pioneer had improved.

"They’re probably a better side than they were last year," he said.

This weekend, Albion will be hosting the top team Star women, who are unbeaten.

Albion are a clear second in the competition, leading the next closest team by 14 points.

Star beat Albion 35-5 in the first game of the season.

Having finished second last year, McClure said to go one better the team needed to just work hard, keep supporting each other and keep up the communication.

"Just the basics," she said.

She was hoping practices would be a bit fuller this week. A lot of players had been off sick.

She wanted her team to continue perfecting that "fast game".

"It’s just that gelling between the forwards and the backs," she said.

The team was trying to play a fast game up the middle and then get the ball wide.

‘It’s just about getting those connections happening and getting those quick balls working," she said.
