People will be able to learn more about Gore historian Herries Beattie during Southland Heritage month.

This month activities will be held throughout Southland to celebrate the region’s history.

Gore Historical Museum curator Stephanie Herring said two public events would take place at Gore’s Maruawai Centre.

On March 18, Hocken Collections in Ōtepoti Dunedin Māori Archivist Rauhina Scott-Fyfe (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe) will speak about the work of Mr Beattie.

"It’s called ‘Our Treasure: Herries Beattie’," Ms Herring said.

Mr Beattie grew up in Gore and amassed a lifetime of records.

"He had childhood diaries, he had newspaper clippings, manuscripts, essays, he did oral histories with European settlers but he also went out to the coast and he spoke to kaumatua and kuia.

"All of those records have been collected up and deposited at the Hocken library."

Mx Scott-Fyfe is part of a team digitising the records.

On March 25, a paid Preserving our Past session will be held with Gore chef Jude Taylor and Robbies by Mrs Pickles founder Josie Robinson.

"We’re going to take a historic food journey looking at preserving and pickles and all of the things people used to do to save the pennies or out of necessity, in the kitchen."

An open day at the East Gore Arts Centre will be held on Sunday afternoon.

The Gore District Historical Society Tour will take place on Monday.

People taking part in the tour will make their own way to Tapanui to visit the West Otago Vintage Museum, the Tapanui Cemetery and then to Paterson Gardens at Greenvale for lunch.

Final registry for the tour ends today.

The Southland Steam Engine Club will also hold an open afternoon at its premises in Brydone on March 23.
