West Otago dog triallist Kay McClymont and her heading dog, Peggy Sue, will spend the festive season training for the New Zealand Yarding Challenge final.

The duo won the novice section of the South Island Yarding Challenge at the West Otago A&P Show in Tapanui on November 22.

Ms McClymont said she was "shocked" to win the novice competition.

"It was exciting."

The pair were the only novice finalists to pen a flock of the composite hoggets.

Ms McClymont and Peggy Sue will compete in a New Zealand Yarding Challenge final at Aratiatia Station in Taupō on January 18.

She had never competed in the North Island before or in a national final.

The pair would be doing a lot of training between now and then, she said.

"I don’t want to go all that way and not be competitive, so we’ll be ramping up the training through December and early January."

The training never felt like work because she enjoyed it so much.

Ms McClymont farms sheep, beef and deer on about 12ha near Tapanui and works for VetSouth as its Tapanui clinic co-ordinator.

Peggy Sue competes under the abbreviated name Peg.

Ms McClymont bred Peggy Sue and trained the 2-year-old dog from a pup.

Peggy Sue was sired by Brian Dickison’s dog Cole.

Ms McClymont had been a member of the Maitland Sheep Dog Trial Club for more than a decade.

She acknowledge the strong support from her club.

The sport was very social and had a high level of camaraderie.

"You’re all competing against each other, but everybody is so encouraging and supportive."

Four of the five novice finalists in Tapanui were women, she said.

"It’s a really great sport to be involved in and there’s a lot of females in it now, which is really good."

Ms McClymont and Peggy Sue won the maiden section at a heat for the New Zealand Yarding Challenge at the Ashburton A&P Show in early October.

The duo scored 91.5 points in Ashburton.

"That was a shock as well."
