Age triumphed over youth in a Hockey Southland division two game at Gore on Saturday.

The Pinkies won the Hockey Southland division two game against Mataura Riversdale 3-1 in Gore.

Pinkies captain Janette Collins said it was the team’s set play that contributed to the win.

She scored directly from a well-directed penalty corner hit to the top of the circle and then received a pass from another penalty corner hit to score again.

Jess Roy scored a "lovely" field goal.

The team would take the win, "considering we’re probably a bit full of rust and don’t practise".

Half Frances Sprenger, 16, played well.

"She just had a really solid game."

It was 2-nil to the Pinkies at halftime.

The Pinkies added another goal in the third quarter but Mataura Riversdale scored in the final quarter.

Mataura Riversdale is coached by Brenda Hope and Kelly Sanson.

It is the first time the two clubs have combined to compete in division two, having previously fielded a side each.

Hope said she was happy with the result given it was the first game and four players were unavailable.

She felt the players improved as the game progressed.

"Their confidence grew especially when they’re younger and playing women who are a lot smarter and clever."

The team kept the Pinkies scoreless in the last quarter.

"We won the last quarter one nil."

Goalkeeper Tegan Cleaver, 15, had a good game.
