West Otago and surrounding areas are in for a treat this winter, says committee member Margs Hall.

The West Otago Theatrical Society’s (WOTS) production of Mary Poppins will open in Tapanui at the end of June.

Ms Hall said it would be a spectacular show.

It was set in London in the early 1900s and it was a story most knew and loved, she said.

"It’s a feel-good story with a touch of magic here and there. Your toes will be tapping to the energetic musical numbers and the story will warm your heart," she said.

Invercargill’s Kayla Wilcox will play the role of Mary Poppins and Scott Mitchell, of Cromwell, plays Bert, the narrator and friend of Mary Poppins.

Other actors in the show include Lucas Miller, 12, and Carter Mitchell, 11, as Michael and Jane Banks and their understudies Georgia Bell, 12, and Zoe Lietze, 9.

"These young people are fantastic already and their journeys have just begun."

Their mother in the story, Winifred Banks, is played by Tapanui Primary School principal Jane Stuart and the father, George Banks, is played by farmer Rob Hall.

Director Margie Rea has directed other WOTS shows including Cats, Les Miserables, Annie and The Phantom of the Opera.
