Athletics Taieri competitor Sam Gouverneur was ''chuffed'' to be one of only four junior athletes to win the coveted Nick Willis scholarship at the weekend's South Island Colgate Games.

The 14-year-old won the 800m and 1500m finals and came second in the 400m final earning him the scholarship that will help him compete.

He said running was ''a bit of a lifestyle now'' and he was training and competing about seven hours a week on average.

''I definitely don't know what I would be doing if I wasn't running. I would definitely like to go as hard as I can and make a career out of it but it is a bit early to tell how I will go.''

He said running was a social event but he also enjoyed winning and competing.

''The big meets, you get to hang out with a whole lot of cool people but really it keeps me fit, makes me feel a lot healthier. It is like a natural high just getting out and running.''

Team manager Jenny McNally said the award was ''very exciting and well deserved''.

''He is just a great kid that kid. He is just the nicest 14-year-old boy you could hope to meet and a top athlete. He had a good couple of days.''

The scholarships provides financial support and are awarded to the top four athletes at each of the Colgate Games.

About 950 children competed in the games at Dunedin's Caledonia Ground from Friday to Sunday.

Dunedin competitors won 61 medals.
