Josh Hou and Kirk Madgwick battled to a tight finish at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

The Hill City-University pair could not be separated as they crossed the line together in the 1500m.

They cleared 27 seconds on the rest of the field but could not shake one another, both finishing in 4min 20.33sec.

There was a tight battle for third, too.

North Otago’s Jeffrey Spillane ran 4min 47.77sec to hold off the fastest woman, Christchurch Avon’s Lahana Reeves, by 0.11sec.

The other track events had more convincing winners.

Taieri’s Felix McDonald ran 11.16sec to beat North Otago’s Schuyler Orr in the 100m, although Orr’s 23.17sec left him a long way ahead of second-placed Ben Smith’s 24.75sec in the 200m.

HCU’s Rosie Elliott continued her strong summer with an 11.85sec 100m, while Leith’s Caitlin O’Donnell was the fastest woman in the 200m in 27.06sec.

Quin Hartley (HCU) won the 400m in 50.52sec, while Zara Geddes (HCU) was the best of the women in 66.71sec.

In the triple jump, HCU’s Madeleine Lindemann managed 11.22m to win, while Cameron Miller (HCU) won in 6.08m.

Taieri’s Zharna Beattie continued her impressive form with a 40.63m to win the women’s discus, edging younger sister Shyah, who was second.

Taieri duo Ethan Walker and Anton Schroeder impressed in the men’s javelin, throwing 57.95m and 54.28m respectively.

Taieri Paralympian Holly Robinson threw 38.24m in the women’s event.
