Ajax, South Pac Magic stay on top

The two top teams claimed convincing wins in women's club basketball on Tuesday night.

Ajax beat Varsity 53-36 and the South Pac Magic remained unbeaten with a 73-48 win over Andy Bay Kavanagh.

For Ajax, it was a strong second half that got the job done.

A low-scoring start left the score at 20-20 at halftime, but Ajax pulled away in the third quarter. It held Varsity to six third-quarter points, while adding 16 itself - eight to Danielle Frost - to open up a handy lead.

That lead continued to open in the fourth quarter as it closed out the game.

Frost led the way with 24 points, while Esther Cheong top-scored for Varsity with 10.

The South Pac Magic had too much for Kavanagh in the late game.

Guard Dayna Turnbull finished with a game-high 21 points, including a stretch in the third quarter when she scored 15 in a row for the Magic.

It opened a 19-11 lead at the first break and extended that to 36-21 at halftime.

Kavanagh had its best offensive quarter in the third, but Turnbull's 15 points helped the Magic again widen the gap to 58-38, before it increased the margin to 25 at the final buzzer.

Alongside Turnbull, Megan Day had a strong night for the Magic, scoring 16 points.

Dre Whaanga led the way for Kavanagh with 15.
