Basketball: Dickel spurs new side to first success

Long-serving Tall Blacks point guard Mark Dickel made his return to Dunedin A-grade basketball on Saturday for the Bombers (1-8) and wasted no time by helping the club secure its first victory of the season, over the Saints (4-5).

Dickel was unable to play for his former club, the Magic, after league rules allowed only two of the top 12 Nugget players to play on each team unless they had played for the club in the past two years.

While he would have preferred to play for his Magic club, Dickel chose a new team which he felt could best use his skills.

"I just picked a team that I felt needed the most, and I had a good relationship with Heps [Chris Hepburn] and [Steve] Robinson," Dickel said.

Dickel, while scoring just six points, was inspirational and showed what a difference one player can make to a team, as the Bombers strolled home 91-70.

His prescience was invaluable as Robinson lit up with a game-high 31 points, while Hepburn scored 26.

While the playoffs could be out of reach for the Bombers after a slow start, it should make for a tougher league, as all teams try to make a run at the top four.

Dickel said it felt good to play and he would try to do so whenever he could for the rest of the season.

Later in the day, the Falcons (7-2) and the Magic (7-2) played out a top-of-the-table clash.

The Falcons showed they could be the early favourites for the title as they put on a strong fourth quarter to win 84-57.

Sam King was at his dominant best, pushing aside players under the basket to score a team-high 23 points and help beat a Magic side which had won its previous seven matches.

The Magic was without top scorer Riki Buckrell, but Doug Patterson did his defiant best to make it a contest and easily had his best game of the season, with 27 points.

In the other game, Otago Boys' High School (4-5) held off a fourth-quarter charge by University Blue (4-5) to win 85-82 and further cloud the playoff picture.

Cody Gilles stole the show, scoring 33 points, including all of his team's final 10 points in one of his best games of the season.

Adam Dunstan top-scored for University with 33 points.
