Melbourne United have sacked under-performing US import Cedric Jackson as the team languishes at the bottom of the NBL ladder.

Jackson (30) joined United at the start of the season from the New Zealand Breakers, where he is a club great following three NBL championships.

The point guard has averaged just under 10 points and five assists in his nine NBL games for United - below his output for the Breakers in previous seasons.

He was the league's most valuable player in 2012-13 when he averaged 14.63 points and almost seven assists per game.

United boss Vince Crivelli said the decision to cut Jackson was a "difficult" strategic change after the team lost their past four matches.

"(The decision) is based on giving us the best chance of winning as many games as we possibly can this season," United boss Vince Crivelli said in a statement.

The club expects to announce Jackson's replacement within days.

Jackson's release comes after the Breakers lost American point guard Ben Woodside to a foot injury for two months.

His place at the Breakers will reportedly be taken by American David Stockton who is the son of Utah Jazz great John Stockton.
