Bowls: Kernaghan to play singles at intercentre sevens

International Mike Kernaghan has taken the Dunedin singles spot for this month's national intercentre sevens in Auckland.

Kernaghan (60) made the final of the singles when he returned to international bowls at the Asia-Pacific championships in Christchurch in December.

He is one four current or former Black Jacks in the Dunedin team.

In addition, Andy McLean has represented the New Zealand PBA in world indoor finals.

Paul Girdler has returned from his professional bowls job in Australia to skip the pair.

He skipped the New Zealand triples and fours to gold medals at the Asia-Pacific championships.

His lead in the pairs is former Black Jack Shaun Scott, who won his 10th title and added a bar to his Dunedin gold star when he beat Ken Walker 21-17 in the final of the champion of champions singles last week.

Former Black Jack Terry Scott, the skip of the four, won nine intercentre titles from 1982 to 2005 and will be attempting to win his 10 in Auckland.

Terry Scott, one of the best fours skips in the country, holds the record for the most intercentre wins.

The event was first held in 1970 and Dunedin tops the men's standings with 13 wins.

The most recent was in 2013.

The lead in the four is Craig McCaw.

His wife, Sharon, the winner of the Women's Classic Pairs last week, fills the same spot in the Dunedin women's team.

A feature of the Dunedin women's team is the pairs combination of Jan Hall and Sarah Scott, who have also been named in the Dunedin development team.

Scott (32), a Dunedin technical analyst, will make her international debut for the New Zealand development team in the transtasman test against Australia this week.

It is first time in the Dunedin intercentre team for Hall (57), who played cricket for New Zealand at the Women's World Cup in the 1981-82 season.

Her father, Colin Hall, won seven Bowls Dunedin titles and was a member of Dunedin intercentre teams in the 1970s.

Central Otago and South Otago both have strong women's teams.

The top three Central Otago women are singles player Linley O'Callaghan, who has won a record 33 Central Otago women's titles, fours skip Margaret O'Connor 28 and pairs lead Christine Buchannan 18.

Singles player Wynette McLachlan and pairs skip Eileen Grant head the South Otago list with 33 titles. Fours skip Christine King is another experienced bowler.

The best players in the South Otago men's team are Robert Wilson in the singles and pairs skip Bob McAuley.

North Otago has not entered teams in the men's or women's events.

The New Zealand intercentre sevens is open to teams from the 27 centres.
